Mozilla has now released Firefox version 118 and with it, the Extended Stable Release channel has also been upgraded to version 115.3. Note that the previously available ESR version 112 is no longer supported. Therefore, if you did use the ESR releases, it is recommended that you upgrade to Firefox version 115 ESR.
Firefox 118 comes with 9 security fixes, 6 of which are deemed of high importance, most of which address out-of-bounds write privileges. It also includes some new features and improvements.

New in Firefox 118
Automatic language translation
Although many modern web browsers already have this feature, Firefox is incorporating it just now. Now, Firefox has a built-in translator that will translate web pages from one language into another natively.
It will automatically detect your default language and check if a web page is in the same language or not. If it isn’t, it will pop up a translation window like the one in the image below. From there, simply confirm the languages and click Translate.
Once you click the Translate button, the web page will reload into your preferred language.
Other features and improvements
Some other improvements and inclusions have also been made to Firefox 118:
- Web Audio in Firefox now uses the FDLIBM math library on all systems to improve anonymity with Fingerprint Protection.
- The visibility of fonts to websites has been restricted to system fonts and language pack fonts to mitigate font fingerprinting in Private Browsing windows.
- Video Effects and background blur are now available to Firefox users on Google Meet.
- Firefox Suggest users (US-only at this time) will now be able to see browser add-on suggestions right in the address bar based on their keywords.

- CVE-2023-5173: Out-of-bounds write in HTTP Alternate Services
- CVE-2023-5174: Double-free in process spawning on Windows
- CVE-2023-5175: Use-after-free of ImageBitmap during process shutdown
- CVE-2023-5176: Memory safety bugs fixed in Firefox 118, Firefox ESR 115.3, and Thunderbird 115.3

Update to Firefox 118
If you already have Mozilla Firefox installed on your computer, then updating it would be easy. Follow the guide below to update your existing Firefox browser to version 118.0.

Launch Firefox and click on the 3 lines in the top-right corner, then click Help.
Expand Help from the menu -
Click “About Firefox.”
Open Firefox’s About page You will now see a pop-up window that will automatically begin searching for an available update and install it.

Once installed, click “Restart to Update Firefox.”
Restart Firefox to update -
Verify that the browser has been updated by returning to the “About Firefox” pop-up.

Install Firefox 118, 115.3 ESR
The following method is a guide for installing Mozilla Firefox on a Windows computer. Installing it on macOS and Linux devices would not be so different.
If you already have Firefox installed on your computer, then installing it again using a downloaded package would automatically upgrade the existing version.

Download the setup file from above and run it.
The installation wizard will now launch.

Click Next.
Proceed -
Select “Standard” installation and then click Next.
Select installation type -
Leave the default location and then click “Install/Upgrade.”
Install or upgrade Firefox The browser will now install.

When completed, click Finish.
Close wizard
Uninstall Mozilla Firefox
If you feel like removing Firefox from your PC, simply follow these steps:

Press the Windows Key + R shortcut to open the Run Command box.

Type in “appwiz.cpl” and then press Enter to open the Programs and Features applet.
Open Programs and Features applet -
Double-click “Mozilla Firefox” to uninstall it.
Double-click Firefox The uninstallation wizard will now open.

Click Next.
Proceed -
Click Uninstall.
Begin uninstallation The wizard will now remove Firefox.

When removed, close the wizard by clicking Finish.
Close the wizard
Firefox will now be removed from your computer.
