NET 8 RC 1

Microsoft has now released .NET 8 Release Candidate (RC) 1. This is the first of the two release candidates that will be made available before the actual release of .NET 8 stable on .NET Conf 2023 to be held on 14-16th November 2023.

With this release, major improvements have been announced for ASP.NET Core, .NET MAUI, and Entity Framework Core included in .NET 8 RC 1.

Let us continue to see the new improvements in this release before continuing to download it.

New in .NET 8 Release Candidate 1

Improvements to System.Text.Json

The following improvements have been made to the System.Text.Json source generator:

  • System.Net.Http.Json extensions for IAsyncEnumerable.
  • JsonContent.Create overloads accepting JsonTypeInfo
  • JsonNode.ParseAsync APIs
  • JsonSerializerOptions.MakeReadOnly(bool populateMissingResolver)

Containers switch to non-preview tagging pattern

In preparation for the General Availability release of .NET 8, the .NET container images have switched to a new tagging pattern for RC 1 that removes “preview” from the tag name.

Floating tags with the names 8.0-preview and 8.0-preview-<OS> were issued in earlier .NET 8 preview versions. With the release of RC 1, these will no longer be maintained. Your tag references will now be updated to 8.0 or 8.0-<OS> instead.

Since these will be the permanent tags that are retained for the duration of .NET 8, making this modification will enable a smooth transition with the stable release of .NET 8.

Cross-building Windows apps with Win32 resources on non-Windows

When building applications targeting Windows on non-Windows platforms, the resulting executable is now updated with any specified Win32 resources – for example, application icon, manifest, version information.

Until recently, Windows-based apps were required for access to these services. Since it was a big pain point affecting both infrastructure complexity and resource utilisation, closing this gap in cross-building support has been a common request.

Ending thoughts

.NET 8 will replace .NET 6 in the Long Term Support (LTS) channel which is said to be supported for 3 years after its initial release. Currently, its preview version is available to download which is now Release Candidate. Note that no more previewing will be released. Instead, Microsoft will now publish Release Candidates as the final, stable release approach.

That said, we suggest that you remain on the stable releases for your production environment while continuing to test out the latest features and improvements in an isolated environment within .NET 8.
