Just a few days after releasing KB4541335 cumulative update, Microsoft has released KB4554364 to fix internet and VPN connectivity issues in Microsoft products like Microsoft Office and Microsoft Edge.
After installing the update KB4541335, a lot of people were complaining about Internet connectivity issues in their Windows 10 systems. The issue got worse because most of the people are working from home nowadays due to Coronavirus lockdowns around the world.
Microsoft recognized the issue and we are waiting for the next Patch Tuesday for this issue to be fixed. However, due to the urgency of the matter, Microsoft has released KB4554364 to fix the internet connectivity issue.
According to Microsoft,
Devices using a manual or auto-configured proxy, especially with a virtual private network (VPN), might show limited or no internet connection status in the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) in the notification area. This might happen when connected to or disconnected from a VPN or after changing the state between the two. Devices with this issue might also have issues reaching the internet using applications that use WinHTTP or WinInet. Examples of apps that might be affected on devices in this state include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Outlook, Internet Explorer 11, and some versions of Microsoft Edge.

What’s new in KB4554364 cumulative update
Please note that this is a cumulative update. If you have not installed previous Windows updates, installing this update will be enough as it contains all the bugfixes and improvements from previous updates.
If we talk specifically about KB4554364, it only fixes a single issue of Internet connectivity in Microsoft applications that use WinHTTP and Winlnet. Here are the words from Microsoft:
Addresses an issue that might display a limited or no internet connection status in the notification area on devices that use a manual or auto-configured proxy, especially with a virtual private network (VPN). Additionally, this issue might prevent some devices from connecting to the internet using applications that use WinHTTP or WinINet.

Install KB4554364 using Windows Update
This update is not being offered through Windows Update or WSUS services. That means, if you are having specific issues related to VPN and Internet connectivity only then you should install this update.

After installing this update, the Operating System build number will be 18363.753 for Windows 10 Version 1909 and 18362.753 for Windows 10 Version 1903.
Uninstall KB4554364 cumulative update
At the time of this writing, I did not find any problem being discussed in different forums regarding this update.
However, if you are having issues with this update, it can be uninstalled in two ways:
Uninstall KB4554364 using Windows Update History tool
- Go to Windows Settings (Windows key + i) –> Update & Security –> Windows Update.
- From the right-hand pane, click on View update history.
- Now click on Uninstall updates.
- Select Update for Microsoft Windows (KB4554364) and press the Uninstall button.
Uninstall KB4554364 using command-line
Another quick way to uninstall this update is by using the command prompt. Here are the commands:
- Open Command Prompt (Run –> cmd)
- Run the following command:
wmic qfe list brief /format:table - This will show all the updates installed on the computer. Make sure KB4554364 is on the list.
- To uninstall the update, run the following command
wusa /uninstall /kb:4554364
The system needs to be restarted after uninstalling the update.
