When you try to install Skype for Windows Desktop latest version (Skype 8.20), it will give you an error “Please install Skype from the Microsoft Store for the best experience“. We will look at ways to install Skype for Windows Desktop without encountering this error.
Microsoft is pushing Windows Store apps and one of those apps seems to be Skype. Skype app is quite limited and people have a learning curve while they switch from Skype for Windows Desktop 7.40 to Skype app. If you download the latest version of Skype for Desktop 8.17, it will refuse to install giving you the following error.
This error comes if you are running Windows 10 Versions 1607, 1703 and 1709. It will install successfully if you are running Windows 10 1511, Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 7. This will force the user to use the already installed Skype Windows app. A new web page will open automatically open taking you to Skype Windows app installation page.

Using compatibility mode to install Skype

Thank you sooo much for sharing a method to avoid the requirement to be only able to download Skype from the Microsoft Store.
For me – and I am sure many other users would like the ability to install Skype to a customised location say D:\Communications\Skype\. by using the methods you have described. Is it possible?
